How to Build a Staple Wardrobe

Fashion is about experimenting and having fun, showing off your personality and expressing yourself through clothes. Don't get me wrong, there are no rules to how you should dress, but there are some ways that you can make your wardrobe more wearable and timeless. More recently, I've found myself wanting to buy classic pieces rather than being swayed by cheap items - especially now i've moved out, I don't want to waste my money on clothes that i'm only going to wear a handful of times.

I'm very much at the beginning of my journey but here's what i've found out so far.

Blur, Hanger, Clothing, Shopping, Market, Close-Up

What is a staple wardrobe?

Quite simply, a staple wardrobe is a selection of clothing that you can rely on for all occasions, use to mix and match and will never go out of fashion - sounds great right? No matter what your style is, at least some of these items should work for everyone, so if you find yourself not knowing what to wear or just wanting an easy outfit, grab your staples.

What should you include in a staple wardrobe?

  • A white T-shirt - simple and versatile, you can wear it all year round. Although it may seem boring, a good-quality white T-shirt will last you for years, paired with jeans for an everyday look, or used as a base to be layered with fun prints or bright colours.
  • Little black dress - going to a party and don't know what to wear? A LBD is your best friend! It's such a simple get classic look, matched with black heels and a red lip, anyone looks good in a LBD.
  • Black boots - casual, smart or dressed up, black boots will serve you all year round. Opt for a boot that has a small heel or a chelsea boot, as this will be much more wearable.
  • Jeans - everyone should own a pair of jeans including black, dark wash and light wash. Skinny jeans will never go out of fashion, but straight leg or mom style are also a good option and a little more stylish.
  • Leather jacket - the leather jacket looks good with everything. Good-quality, soft leather, or leather look, will continue to look amazing year after year. Whether you're throwing it over a dress or with trousers, it really finishes off an outfit for an edgy look.
  • Black blazer - definitely worth the price, a black blazer is a true investment for all the seasons. It can make even the simplest of outfits look classy and put-together.

What can you gain from having a staple wardrobe?

For me, building a staple wardrobe is my way of simplifying my clothes down to the items that i'll actually get good use out of. I often feel like i have a lot of clothes but I still don't have anything to wear - a result of randomly picking things up that i'm not 100% about.
  • Better value for money - try and buy good-quality, staple pieces, although they may be a little pricier, you'll gain longevity, and since they're timeless they'll never go out of fashion.
  • Improved outfits - your outfits will look effortlessly good. On days when you don't know what to wear, grabbing a staple item will make the perfect outfit and keep you looking stylish.
  • The basics - once you have core items in your wardrobe you can use these as a base to all of your outfits.

Where can you shop for staple pieces?

Where you shop totally depends on your budget, however, for closet staples I like to spend a little bit extra as I know i'm going to be wearing them all the time. Including:
  • Zara
  • Mango
  • Topshop
  • H&M
  • Marks & Spencer
  • NAKD
  • & Other Stories
I'm only at the beginning of building my staple wardrobe and there are so many more classic items that you can add, but this is a good place to start. Little by little I hope to have a wardrobe that's full of timeless pieces I love.
